The theme of the exhibition is “TRANS-EVOLVING,” which originates from two Chinese characters. The first part of the theme suggests that our civilization is constantly moving forward with momentum and dynamism. The second part of the theme implies the conditions of blending as we are in a globalized world and different cultures blend to enrich our civilization. In complete forms, the theme reveals how the mankind evolves from the past to the present. Taiwan used to be a stronghold of manufacturing industries. People are curious the following what is Taiwan design; how can Taiwan participate initiate dialogues with the world? How can Taiwan contribute to the world?

From the Curator

The design history tells of how our intelligence and creation have evolved. When faced with reality and problems, we always try to find the best solutions. By integrating aesthetics and philosophical ideas, we have enriched ourselves.

After the industrial revolution, dramatic changes have been observed in design. They have a deep impact on contemporary and future design trends. Witnessing such interesting development, the exhibition intends to explore the changes in design and production over the past hundred years, the innovation and reaction of design concepts, and diversified looks of design.

Whether it’s classical design of the past, amazing design of the present, or design trends in the future, they all reflect the thinking of societies and civilizations at that time. At different points in time, people persistently achieve breakthroughs and innovations with agility, thus constantly evolving.

The present progressive tense “ing” of the theme has three implications. It not only means evolution in time is present progressive, but also suggests how design interacts and transforms all aspects of life. “i” means ideas since as constantly changing ideas over the past hundred years. “n” means novelty as the innovation of technologies or material has made them applicable to design. “g” means generality as facilitating our good design for the past century has served the general public well. Now good design can access ordinary people.

The exhibition has three main exhibit areas divided by different period of evolution. They are “Classics Area”, “Contemporary Area” and “Future Area”. Based on the above-mentioned three exhibition will also introduce how human society has changed; how arts and cultures have evolved, how historical events have influenced humanity, and how technologies have achieved breakthroughs.

Although industrial design originated in the West, the global economic focus has shifted to the East after the development of Civilization of the past century. Taiwan used to be a stronghold of manufacturing industries, and has vigorously developed designs for the past fifty years. We are curious about the following questions: what is Taiwan design. How can Taiwan participate in the world and initiate dialogues with the world? How can we contribute to the world? Through this exhibition Taiwan is expected to connect to the world and show how its design has influenced with lifestyle of the past, present and future.

Based on achievements of the past and present, we hope to achieve “TRANS-EVOLVING” through design!
